At its highly anticipated Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2024), Apple officially announced a landmark partnership with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into its next-generation operating systems: iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. The move is a cornerstone of Apple’s new “Apple Intelligence” initiative, a suite of AI-powered features designed to make its devices more helpful and intuitive.
The integration will primarily function in two ways. First, Apple’s virtual assistant, Siri, will gain the ability to tap into ChatGPT for more complex queries that go beyond its native capabilities. When a user makes a request Siri can’t handle, it will ask for permission to consult ChatGPT and present the answer directly. Second, ChatGPT will be accessible through new system-wide Writing Tools, allowing users to generate content, rewrite text, or summarize articles directly within apps like Mail, Notes, and Pages.
Apple executives, including Senior Vice President of Software Engineering Craig Federighi, emphasized a “privacy-first” approach. The company stated that user requests sent to ChatGPT will not be logged, and IP addresses will be obscured. Free access will be available without needing an account, while existing ChatGPT subscribers can link their accounts for access to paid features.
This strategic partnership allows Apple to instantly deploy a state-of-the-art large language model across its billion-plus devices, leapfrogging years of potential in-house development to better compete with Google’s Gemini and Microsoft’s Copilot. However, the decision has drawn criticism from privacy advocates and industry figures. Notably, Elon Musk voiced strong opposition, calling the OS-level integration an “unacceptable security violation” and threatening to ban Apple devices from his companies. Apple’s challenge will be to balance rapid AI advancement with its long-standing commitment to user privacy.
