Waymo and Uber Eats Partner to Launch Autonomous Food Delivery in Phoenix

Alphabet’s self-driving technology unit, Waymo, and ride-hailing giant Uber announced a new multi-year partnership this week to bring autonomous food delivery to the public. The collaboration will integrate Waymo’s fleet of fully autonomous vehicles into the Uber Eats platform, starting with a rollout in Phoenix, Arizona.

Beginning immediately, residents in select Phoenix metropolitan areas, including Chandler, Tempe, and Mesa, who order from specific local and national merchants on the Uber Eats app may have their meals delivered by a Waymo Driver—the company’s term for its AI-powered autonomous system. For now, the service will be limited to deliveries from a handful of participating restaurants, with plans to expand the number of merchants and the service area over time.

Unlike Waymo’s ride-hailing service, this new application will involve no human occupants. When the vehicle arrives, the customer will receive a notification and use the Uber Eats app to unlock the car and retrieve their order from the backseat. This marks a significant operational expansion for Waymo, moving beyond transporting people to handling the logistics of goods delivery.

For Uber, this partnership offers a glimpse into a more efficient, and potentially more profitable, future for its delivery arm, reducing its reliance on human couriers. While the initial scale is limited, the collaboration signals a major vote of confidence in the reliability and safety of autonomous vehicle technology for complex urban environments. It also positions the two companies, once seen as fierce rivals in the mobility space, as key partners in shaping the future of on-demand services. The Phoenix area has long served as a primary testing ground for Waymo’s technology, making it a natural starting point for this next phase of commercialization.
