Amazon is preparing a major overhaul for its Alexa voice assistant, planning to introduce two distinct versions of its new generative AI-powered service later this year. According to sources familiar with the project, codenamed “Banyan,” the company will offer a premium, ad-free subscription tier alongside a free, ad-supported version, ensuring all users can access the next-generation “Remarkable Alexa.”
The move represents a fundamental shift in Amazon’s strategy for its popular but largely unprofitable voice assistant. The current version of Alexa will be replaced by the new AI-driven system, which is designed to handle more complex, multi-step queries, personalize interactions, and offer a more natural conversational experience. The premium version is expected to cost around $5 per month and will provide access to the most powerful AI models without interruptions.
The free tier, however, will be supported by advertising, introducing a new monetization model for the Alexa ecosystem. This ad-supported version will still offer the core generative AI enhancements but may include marketing messages in its responses or suggest purchases based on user queries. For example, when asked for cooking advice, the new Alexa might suggest purchasing a specific brand of ingredients from Amazon Fresh or Whole Foods.
This dual-tier strategy aims to address the massive cost of developing and running advanced AI models while revitalizing a product that has struggled to find a consistent revenue stream beyond device sales. By offering a free version, Amazon avoids erecting a paywall for its existing tens of millions of users, a move that could have caused significant backlash. The company is betting that a more intelligent and capable Alexa will drive user engagement and create new opportunities for advertising and e-commerce integration, directly challenging the advanced AI assistants being developed by Google, Microsoft, and Apple. The success of this gambit will depend on whether Amazon can seamlessly integrate ads without alienating its user base.
