Amazon is preparing to launch the most significant overhaul of its Alexa voice assistant in a decade, introducing a new subscription-based tier powered by conversational generative AI. The revamped service, internally codenamed “Project Banyan,” will replace the current free version and is expected to launch by August of this year.
The new Alexa will operate on a two-tiered system. A basic, free version will remain, but a more powerful and capable conversational AI assistant will be available for a monthly fee, projected to be between $5 and $10. This premium version is designed to handle more complex, multi-step queries, learn user preferences, and automate intricate smart home routines, moving far beyond the simple commands the assistant is known for today.
This strategic pivot addresses long-standing profitability challenges within Amazon’s Devices division, which has historically subsidized its hardware with the goal of driving retail sales. With mounting pressure to compete with advanced AI offerings from Google, OpenAI, and Apple, Amazon is betting that users will be willing to pay for a substantially smarter and more useful assistant. The underlying technology for the new Alexa has been rebuilt from the ground up to incorporate large language models, a massive engineering effort to modernize the platform.
