ByteDance, the parent company of the popular social media platform TikTok, is partnering with U.S. semiconductor giant Broadcom to develop an advanced, custom 5-nanometer (5nm) AI processor. This strategic collaboration is aimed at securing a stable supply of high-end chips for ByteDance’s data centers, which power everything from TikTok’s recommendation algorithms to its expanding enterprise software offerings.
The move is a significant step for ByteDance as it navigates the complex landscape of U.S.-China technology restrictions. By co-designing an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) with Broadcom, ByteDance can create a processor optimized for its unique AI workloads while ensuring compliance with U.S. export controls.
