Apple is set to redefine password management for its vast user base with the upcoming launch of a dedicated “Passwords” app. Announced as part of its next wave of operating systems—iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia—the new app will unbundle the company’s existing iCloud Keychain functionality from the Settings menu and present it as a standalone, user-friendly utility.
For years, Apple has offered robust password and passkey storage through iCloud Keychain, but its location deep within system settings has made it less accessible than third-party alternatives. The new Passwords app aims to solve this by providing a single, intuitive hub for managing all types of credentials, including website and app passwords, passkeys, Wi-Fi passwords, and two-factor authentication verification codes. The app will be seamlessly synchronized across all of a user’s Apple devices.
Significantly, Apple is also extending the app’s reach beyond its own ecosystem. A new version of the iCloud for Windows app will include the Passwords app, allowing users on PCs to access and manage their credentials just as they would on a Mac or iPhone. This cross-platform approach positions the app as a direct and formidable competitor to established password managers like 1Password, LastPass, and Bitwarden.
The Passwords app will also incorporate Apple’s existing security features, such as proactively alerting users to common vulnerabilities like weak, reused, or compromised passwords that have appeared in known data breaches. By making these powerful security tools more visible and easier to use—at no additional cost—Apple is leveraging its platform advantage to simplify digital security for hundreds of millions of users. This move is poised to significantly disrupt the third-party password manager market and establish a new baseline for integrated credential security.
