Microsoft Pulls Controversial ‘Recall’ AI Feature from Windows 11 Launch, Citing Security Backlash

Microsoft has officially altered the rollout plan for its controversial AI-powered feature, “Recall,” following significant backlash from the cybersecurity community and privacy advocates. The feature, intended as a cornerstone of its new Copilot+ PCs, will no longer ship as a default, broadly available experience on June 18. Instead, it will be moved to the Windows Insider Program for a preview period.

Initially unveiled in May, Recall was designed to take periodic screenshots of a user’s active screen, creating a searchable visual timeline of virtually everything they had done on their computer. Microsoft promoted it as a revolutionary way to find past information, powered by on-device AI. However, security researchers quickly raised alarms, pointing out that the data was being stored in an unencrypted database on the local machine. This created what many called a “honeypot” for malware and hackers, who could potentially extract a user’s entire digital history with a single breach.

In response to the mounting criticism, Microsoft first announced it would make the feature opt-in and add more security, including encryption via Windows Hello. However, just days before the launch, the company has now taken the more drastic step of pulling it from the general release entirely.

In a blog post, Microsoft stated it was adjusting the release model to “leverage the expertise of the Windows Insider community to ensure the experience meets our high standards for quality and security.” This move is seen as a direct acknowledgment of the feature’s premature and poorly secured initial design. The decision highlights the ongoing tension between the tech industry’s rapid push to integrate generative AI into core products and the fundamental need for user privacy and robust security. For now, users of the new Copilot+ PCs will not have access to Recall unless they voluntarily join the Insider program to test it.
