OpenAI has acquired the enterprise collaboration startup Multi, signaling a strategic push to enhance the teamwork capabilities of its flagship AI products. The deal will see the Multi team integrated into OpenAI’s efforts to build out new features for ChatGPT Enterprise, the company’s business-focused offering.
Multi, formerly known as Remotion, gained recognition for its “multiplayer” screen-sharing tool designed specifically for engineering teams. The platform allowed for simultaneous screen control, shared cursors, and low-latency communication, aiming to replicate the experience of in-person collaboration for remote workers. The company announced that as part of the acquisition, its standalone service will be shut down on July 24, 2024.
In a statement, OpenAI confirmed the acquisition, highlighting the Multi team’s expertise in building tools for real-time, productive collaboration. The move suggests that OpenAI is focused on evolving ChatGPT from a personal assistant into a central hub for team-based projects and workflows. By integrating Multi’s technology and talent, OpenAI could introduce features that allow multiple users to interact with and build upon AI-generated content simultaneously within the ChatGPT interface.
This acquisition follows OpenAI’s recent purchase of database analytics firm Rockset and reflects a broader strategy of acquiring specialized teams and technology to bolster its infrastructure and product capabilities. As businesses increasingly adopt AI, the demand for integrated, collaborative tools is growing. This move positions OpenAI to compete more directly with established enterprise software giants like Microsoft Teams, Slack, and Google Workspace, which are also racing to embed generative AI deep into their collaboration suites. The integration of Multi’s team is expected to accelerate the development of a more interactive and team-oriented ChatGPT experience for corporate clients.
