Pika Labs Raises $80 Million, Launches Pika 1.0 to Challenge OpenAI in AI Video Generation

AI video generation startup Pika Labs has officially launched its new platform, Pika 1.0, and announced it has raised $80 million in a Series B funding round. The move positions the company as a serious contender in the rapidly evolving generative video market, challenging established players like OpenAI, Runway, and Stability AI.

The funding round, led by Lightspeed Venture Partners with participation from other notable investors, brings Pika’s total capital raised to $135 million. The fresh infusion of cash will be used to expand the team and further develop the underlying AI technology. Co-founder and CEO Demi Guo emphasized that the company’s mission is to empower everyone to become a video creator.

Pika 1.0 is a significant upgrade from the company’s previous beta versions, which were accessible through Discord. The new web-based platform introduces a suite of tools that allows users to generate and edit videos in various styles, including photorealistic, 3D animation, and anime. Users can create content from simple text prompts, still images, or even existing video clips.

Key features of Pika 1.0 include video-to-video transformations, allowing users to change the style and content of uploaded videos, and an “expand” tool that can alter the aspect ratio of a video (e.g., from 9:16 to 16:9). The platform also supports in-painting, enabling users to modify specific elements within a scene, such as changing a character’s clothing or adding new objects. This launch signals a major step in making advanced AI video creation tools more accessible and user-friendly, moving them beyond expert-only applications and into the hands of mainstream creators and marketers.
