Elon Musk Threatens to Ban Apple Devices at His Companies Over OpenAI Integration

In a dramatic response to Apple’s newly announced partnership with OpenAI, Elon Musk has threatened to ban all Apple devices from the premises of his companies, including Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI. The declaration, made on Musk’s social media platform X, came just hours after Apple revealed its “Apple Intelligence” platform at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC).

The core of the issue lies in Apple’s integration of OpenAI’s ChatGPT into its operating systems, including iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. While Apple emphasized on-device processing for most AI tasks and user-permission-based queries for more complex requests sent to ChatGPT, Musk labeled the integration an “unacceptable security violation.” He stated, “If Apple integrates OpenAI at the OS level, then Apple devices will be banned at my companies.”

Musk elaborated that visitors would have to check their Apple devices at the door, where they would be stored in a Faraday cage to block electromagnetic signals. This hardline stance underscores the deep-seated competition and mistrust within the AI sector. Musk, a co-founder of OpenAI, has since become a vocal critic of the organization and its partnership with Microsoft, while launching his own competitor, xAI.

Apple has responded to the security concerns, clarifying that user IP addresses are obscured and OpenAI does not store user requests. Furthermore, the integration is an optional feature that requires explicit user consent for each request. Despite these assurances, Musk’s public condemnation highlights a growing debate over data privacy and the security implications of deeply embedding powerful third-party AI models into consumer technology ecosystems. The clash signals a new front in the AI wars, where corporate security policies may be shaped by the rivalries of tech titans.
